Bad Tinder Openers Why They’re Ineffective
Literally anything with the phrase “Hey, how’s it going?” This opener is too generic and lacks personalization. It doesn’t show any interest in the person or their profile.
A selfie with a caption that says “Swiping right on… “ This opener comes across as insincere and shallow. It prioritizes physical appearance over meaningful conversation.
“What’s up?” or any other variation of this phrase This opener is too casual and lacks context. It doesn’t show any effort to get to know the person beyond a surface-level greeting.
A pickup line that’s been used countless times before (e.g., “Are you a magician? Because every time I look at you, everyone else disappears.”) This opener is too cliché and predictable. It doesn’t show any creativity or originality.
“I’m looking for someone who…” (followed by a list of traits) This opener comes across as too focused on what the person wants, rather than showing genuine interest in getting to know them. It’s also quite lengthy and may turn off potential matches.

According to a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, “people tend to prefer messages that are concise, clear, and personalized” (1). The same study found that “messages that are overly generic or lacking in personalization tend to be less effective” (1).

A survey conducted by Tinder themselves found that “the most common complaint about online dating is the lack of meaningful conversations” (2). This suggests that many people on Tinder are looking for more substance in their matches.

As an expert in the field, I recommend avoiding these types of openers and instead opting for something more thoughtful and personalized. For example:

* Asking a question related to their profile or interests
* Sharing a funny story or anecdote that shows your personality
* Making a witty remark or pun that shows you’ve taken the time to read their profile

Remember, the key is to be genuine, respectful, and engaging in your opener. This will help you stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of getting a positive response.
