Paleomagnetic dating

Measurement Description
Remanence The magnetic field recorded in a rock.
Paleointensity The strength of the Earth’s magnetic field when the rock was formed.
Virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) The location of the Earth’s magnetic pole when the rock was formed.

Method Description
Thermal demagnetization Heating the rock to remove secondary magnetic fields.
Alternating field demagnetization (AFD) Exposing the rock to alternating magnetic fields to remove secondary magnetic fields.
Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) Measuring the magnetic properties of the rock to determine its preferred direction of magnetization.

Application Description
Stratigraphy Dating and correlating rock layers.
Tectonics Reconstructing the movement of tectonic plates.
Paleoclimatology Studying past climate change.
